THIRD SIX WEEKS REPORTING PERIOD
PARENT UPDATE LETTER

November 29, 2011

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We are nearing the end of the first semester and the students are so ready for a break. In class we are taking a week off from editing and writing for the yearbook, and working on an Andy Warhol project. The staff is learning to use the basic tools in Photoshop and that math is part of graphic design. Their project will be matted and suitable for framing once completed. This project combines advertising and marketing jingles from the 60s, so if your student comes home singing Double Your Pleasure, you’ll know why.

The yearbook staffs have a second deadline due the day we break for the holidays. But the staff is ahead of schedule and we are almost ready to submit our people section to Jostens. The students created wordles (word clouds) for select students with outstanding accomplishments and/or interests. The cobbed students sit within their wordles that describe them along with photos of them doing “their thing,”

The newspaper students are completing stories for the third edition and will be working ‘till the cows come home on Monday, December 5, from 3:30 - 5:30 to lay out our print edition of the Paw Print.. We call this CRUNCH day and Hershey’s crunch bars are a part of the after school work day. Our paper goes to press December 8. Look for a copy in the office and/or contact me if you would like one. Our student newspaper often doesn’t make it home. The news staff is also working on the Warhol project and will be creating t-shirts with their iron-on designs. Their marketing slogans are clever to say the least.

We do have a final in journalism. On Friday, December 9, the students will take an open book test over terms we have learned during this semester. On Monday, December 12, the students will take an InDesign test and will need to correct obvious design errors.

We will also be making holiday cards and gift tags using Photoshop to wrap up our semester. Students should email a favorite photo to be used for their cards. The designed card will be uploaded to a local vendor so that you can pick up a copy of the card after we break for the holidays.

I’ve enjoyed teaching these 7th and 8th graders who are finding themselves during the in between years.

Happy Hoiidays!
