Hello!
I’m Mrs. Dowd and have been teaching for 15 years. I love middle school kids. I guess that’s because I really don’t ever want to grow up! I also enjoy what I teach and love applied arts - writing, graphic design, typography and photography.
I have been married 40 years, and Mike and I have two grown children. We are known to our grandchildren, Graham and Everett, as Paw Paw and Gigi.
We are a vanishing breed in that both of us are native Austinites. We graduated from McCallum High School, and grew up in central Austin - back in the 60’s and before MoPac! We have seen Austin grow from a small college town into urban sprawl.
I graduated from Southwest Texas State University with a degree in Education and English and am certified to teach in all core subject areas in grades 4 - 8. In addition to 15 years of teaching and three years in administration as an assistant principal, I have enjoyed working in educational publishing and marketing with Holt Rinehart & Winston and KLBJ Radio. I also freelance as a writer and photographer for The Round Rock Leader and Austin American Statesman.
I look forward to getting to teaching you how to become a reporter and writer, tell stories with photos and paint pictures with syllables. Many former students continue with newspaper, yearbook or literary magazine and photography in high school and beyond. What you will learn in this elective will train you to become better at time management, work as a team even if you don’t always agree and confident at public speaking.
